Split level Gardens are often the most striking and offer endless amounts of features and points of interest. Often used to increase functionality on sloped spaces and hills creating level areas can vastly decrease waste costs In terms of construction spoil. Split levels are always going to involve some element of structural retainers which divide the areas and stop from slowly sliding down to the lower levels.

We often use oak sleepers for retainers due to the fact they are relevantly quick to install and have an unbelievably high tensile strength, both new and reclaimed sleepers can be used for this application but reclaimed sleepers are soaked in creosote for preservation purposes, normally they have large amounts of fuel and oil soaked into the timber as they are sourced from railway lines so potential contamination of soil and therefore planting and turfing using reclaimed needs to be addressed with a moisture barrier non textile ground sheet.

Bolted and strapped together using galvanised fixings that don’t rust or erode underground they create an interlocked retainer that is much stronger than brick or block work which is more labour intensive and costly in terms of materials as well. Or if the design or space requires it the sleepers can be dug in to the ground on end thus allowing the wall to be curved wether it be set out by eye or geometric curves set out using pivotal points where pins and lines in specific points create exactly corresponding curves. Setting out for jobs like those just described is normally the hardest part of the job and accuracy is of paramount importance if a clean and professional finish is the goal which is should always be.

Wether in be by design or necessity a split level garden always creates a dramatic effect, often problematic to prepare but untimely the rewards are far greater than a level space. They always create interesting features and niche areas that can be utilised to full effect allowing the design to evolve as much in the later stages in terms of extra planters, rockeries, raised turf areas adding extra colours textures and contrasts to the original design for minimal outlay in terms money.
